British designer Joss Stoddart makes furniture and objects from his workshop in the Hampshire countryside. His work begins with material: the form of a tree, its character and the marks left by making all help determine what a piece becomes. Rather than imposing a design on the timber, he works with its natural qualities. Working predominantly with British-grown wood, he sources trees and boards from local woodlands and sawmills, and where possible uses trees belonging to his clients, following the material from standing tree to finished piece.
